Official Launch of IMHMA China Representative Office & Inaugural Industry Expert Symposium Held

With the spring breeze bringing renewal to the land, the official launch ceremony of the International Mental Health Management Association (IMHMA) China Representative Office, alongside the First Industry Expert Symposium, was grandly held on March 22. This event marks the official entry of the Association’s operations in mainland China into a legalized and standardized track, contributing international professional strength to the construction of China’s social psychosocial service system.

The event received high attention from relevant competent authorities and the domestic psychology community. More than 50 attendees, including authoritative experts from the School of Psychological and Cognitive Sciences at Peking University, the Research Centre for Law and Psychology at the China University of Political Science and Law, and clinical psychology departments of renowned Grade-A tertiary hospitals, as well as member representatives, were present at this grand gathering.

Compliance First: Responding to the "Healthy China" Strategy

At the launch ceremony, Dr. Robert Harris, Global Chairman of IMHMA, delivered a speech via video link. He stated, “China is the most dynamic sector in the global mental health landscape. IMHMA has always strictly abided by the Law of the People's Republic of China on the Administration of Activities of Overseas Non-Governmental Organizations in the Mainland, establishing our China office under the guidance of relevant departments. We are committed to combining cutting-edge international mental management concepts with China's profound cultural heritage, serving as a compliant bridge for Sino-foreign mental health exchange.”

Mr. Zuo Feng, Chief Representative of IMHMA China Region, emphasized in his keynote report that the official operation of the representative office is a proactive response to the call for "strengthening the mental health service system" outlined in the "Healthy China 2030" Planning Outline. In the future, the Association will focus on the construction of ethical norms in the counseling industry, the legal boundaries of Employee Assistance Programs (EAP), and standardized processes for crisis intervention.

Academic Focus: Deep Integration of Professionalism and Rule of Law

During the subsequent Expert Symposium on "Standardization and Localized Compliance of Mental Health Services," participating experts engaged in heated discussions.

Addressing the current issues of chaotic qualifications and blurred ethical boundaries in the industry, Professor Li Chensi, a renowned expert in legal psychology and Special Consultant to the Association, pointed out: “Psychological counseling is not merely a technical issue, but also a legal and ethical one. The introduction of the international association should bring not only technology but also strict industry self-discipline mechanisms and risk prevention systems.”

The symposium also released stage-based research initiatives on topics such as Psychological Privacy Protection in the Digital Age and Home-School-Community-Medical Linkage Mechanisms for Youth Mental Health Intervention. Experts on-site reached a consensus that with the diversification of social pressures, mental health management must shift from simple "counseling therapy" to "full-process management," and must be conducted within a legal framework.

Looking Ahead: Empowering the Industry, Serving Society

According to the strategic plan, following its official operation, the IMHMA China Representative Office will carry out three core tasks:

  1. Introduction of International Certification Systems: Promoting the international mutual recognition and localized implementation of professional qualifications such as Mental Health Managers and Trauma Therapists.

  2. Industry Legal Popularization: Organizing a series of legal lectures to enhance practitioners' awareness of legal risk prevention.

  3. Public Welfare Assistance Projects: Collaborating with domestic charitable organizations to provide standardized psychological aid services to vulnerable groups.

The successful conclusion of this launch ceremony not only unveils a new chapter for the development of the International Mental Health Management Association in China but also injects new vitality into the internationalized and standardized development of the domestic mental health industry.
